If You Want Warm Water: Aim for June Through Early August
The outdoor sundeck runs at its fullest capacity through summer, and this is also when the riverfront trail sees the most foot and bike traffic. It's also the busiest stretch on the calendar, which means higher suite rates and cabanas that go fast on weekends — book at least three weeks out if a Saturday cabana matters to you.
If You Want a Deal: Try January Through Early March
Winter is when rates drop the most and the resort runs at its slowest pace. The outdoor pool is closed for the season and Iowa winters aren't mild, but the indoor pool, the spa, and the gaming floor all keep running exactly as they do the rest of the year. It's a legitimately good stretch for a guest who cares more about the tables and the treatment rooms than the riverfront view.
If You Want Fewer Crowds Without Giving Up Good Weather: Go Late September
This is the one our own staff quietly prefers. September afternoons are usually still warm enough for the sundeck, but the crowds from summer have thinned considerably. By early-to-mid October the Loess Hills start turning color, which makes the drive along the river byway worth doing even after the pool closes.
Ask ten staff members here where they'd send their own family for a weekend, and most will say the back half of September.
Spring Is the Wild Card
March and April in this part of Iowa can swing 30 degrees between a morning and an afternoon, so it's the hardest season to plan around with confidence. What spring does offer is the lowest rates outside of winter, plus the first real stretch of usable sundeck weather by late April in most years — if you're comfortable packing for uncertainty, there's real value here.
